Get Involved
Athletes:
An athlete must be at least eight years old and be identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability. Each athlete must have a current Application for Participation (PDF File) on file with the program, to be eligible to train and compete. This form, also called the medical form, must be signed by a physician and is valid for three years. Participation in Special Olympics is free for every athlete.
The benefits to the athletes go beyond the sports. The athletes have opportunities to make new friends, enjoy new experiences, develop confidence and know the pride of accomplishment.

Volunteers:
Special Olympics York County is organized and run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are business people, teachers, medical professionals, family members, retired persons and high school and college students. Their contribution may vary from several hours a week for a sports season or several hours a month throughout the year or several hours once a year at a competition. The thread that ties them together is the commitment to work with Special Olympics athletes. They may serve as coaches, assistant coaches, event organizers, fund raisers or coordinators with various responsibilities. New volunteers are always welcome. The benefits include the satisfaction in helping athletes improve their skills and their self-image.
